Until the world stops turning
An Offering to The Prompt Goddess For First Indulgence: Day 5
This piece is for Prompt #5 of The First Indulgence Challenge.
God, it was so fast. I expected it to be slower. Your eyes, glimmering sapphires, Faded from view.
Then I woke up, which was odd. Is this how it really works? Quantum immortality. Jumping timelines?
I went back to our house. Four walls, but it wasn't a home. We had dreams of better things. Didn't we?
I expected things to be different, but my car was in the driveway. Yours in the street. That wreath still on the door.
It was clear time had passed. The world beyond was different. New buildings, old business. Things seemed busier than when I left.
I passed through the door, Like it wasn't even there. You were wearing a black dress. Mascara stained your cheeks.
Fuck, this wasn't a different timeline, Was it? A brochure sat open on the table. It had my name on it. My photo.
They put me in the ground, and expected you to just move on. Hell, I expected it, too. But you didn't.
You kept those photos of me in the hall. You left my favorite mug in the cupboard. My writing desk remained untouched. Gathering dust in the back room.
The dogs didn't understand, but I think the cats did. They saw the spark had left your eyes. I just wanted to hold you so bad.
I didn't want to leave. You know that, right? We always said we'd never move on, but you meant it.
Does love transcend death? Will I be forced to watch life go on? Can either of us move on? I just don't know.
I was determined to show you, that I was still here. I reached out to touch your face. Focused with all my might.
Your eyes went wide. That spark came back. Just for a moment, Our two worlds met.
I didn't have much time. No promise that it would happen again. So I told you that I'll always love you. Until the world stops turning.
