I feel you on this. That's another thing to mull about. Starting a community is a bit daunting for me at the moment, also like how do you know when to start 🫣🤔
These are really great points, and it can certainly seem daunting. In terms of a podcast, it's simply any topic that you are confident speaking out about and something that you could talk about in the future.
As far as building community, you're already doing it! Commenting like this and sharing your work, those things are important foundations. From there, it's just about what you want to accomplish. Is it a bigger audience? Collaborating with other writers? Educating people about a topic you're passionate about?
Answering those questions will help bring both the podcast and community side of things into focus. And, as always, I'm here to help if you want to message me with any questions!
Thank you Bradley for the support. I haven't gotten to thinking around this, to be honest. But reading your piece made me realise of the next steps, this will definitely go to the vision board. And your offer of support will definitely be in mind 😊. You are amazing, thank you again.
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad the piece is helpful! As with anything, taking things one step at a time is always the best approach. I am looking forward to watching your community grow!
I'm glad it's helpful! Yeah, when you're reading a post just highlight a quote you want to use and then click "restack with quote" when it pops up. You'll get a little window you can customize with background colors or the image the piece uses. It's really cool!
I've been on Substack for about a month now and I'm really enjoying it. I can't bring myself to stick with a shorter chapter length though lol, just not my style. But I'm blown away at how motivating it is over here. I'm glad to be a part of the community.
Hey Crystal, glad to have you here! I totally understand not wanting to go with shorter chapters. Since I wrote this piece, I've actually seen plenty of examples of longer works doing just fine here, so ultimately, whatever length or structure suits your story best is always going to be the ideal approach.
Thanks for checking out the article and sharing your thoughts!
I’m still learning about Substack as a platform while I enjoy the wonderful content I found here. I don’t know when I’ll finally jump in, but this post is encouraging!
Now that I've actually finished reading this... wow, I'm just a teensy bit jealous - of your formatting! Superb ideas ofc, but accentuated perfectly w your spacing, quotes, and images!
I'm going to check out your Pod bc yes, I have been putting starting mine off for far too long!
It's so nice to read one of these posts that is actually about the reading and writing experience rather than how to garner followers and subscribers. Thank you for your insight - and you authenticity.
Hey Katharine, thank you so much for this awesome feedback! My goal with any article like this is to provide real experiences and insights. I appreciate my reader's time and don't want to waste it with vague promises or courses I'm trying to sell, so I'm glad you found this useful!
I plan to do more articles on the craft of writing soon! If there are any topics you would like to see in particular, I would love to know!
I only started writing fiction recently, so I have a lot to learn! I’ll check out your other articles first, because I’m sure you’ve already covered a lot of what I have in mind. Looking forward to exploring them, and your fiction too!
Glad to hear it! I'll be doing articles on writing weekly going forward, so the selection of those will continue to grow with time. If you enjoy podcasts, my podcast on here "Saved as Draft" features a weekly writing tips segment as well!
Yes, I do! I have a full-time job and three kids, so I have way less time to read than I would like (which would ideally be all day, except when I was writing or hiking haha), so podcasts are my best friend. I’ll have a listen later.
**Well-written, Bradley!** Thanks for sharing your insight—it’s invaluable for those of us just starting out. I joined Substack to share my photography, and since I love storytelling, I started incorporating that into my photos.
More recently, I've found a love for writing. You mentioned using AI for image generation... in my case, I've been using it to enhance my fictional writing. I'll attach an example below. I'd love to know your honest opinion if you think it detracts from my story or not.

Honestly I've been thinking about a podcast but I have no idea what I would talk about 😂

Thanks you Bradley. I’m new to substack and it is an overwhelming - but super cool - ocean. This is a great article! 🙏.
Thank you, Rachel! I can't believe I never responded to this. Had to remedy that immediately. 🙏
I don’t think I realized it either! It’s a great article!!
