This is part one of a two-part story. In Side A, we see one perspective; in Side B, we see another. This project was inspired by a March Microfiction prompt: “Tell the story of a sleepwalker and his adventures,” shared by
.I sat in my home office, surrounded by boxes from the recent move, and put in my wireless earbuds.
“Hey, can you hear me?” I asked.
“Yes. Any questions before you go?”
“You’re sure you don’t want me just to bring him in?”
“He doesn’t know what his body is doing while he’s out.”
I laughed. “My new neighbor is sleepwalking and killing people, Joan; I don’t think there’s much to understand here.”
“We need him to cooperate if we’re going to find out what’s happening here,” Joan replied.
“Okay, I’ll be back.”
I pulled out my phone and opened an app called Mindful.Me, which was technically a meditation app.
Technically.
I closed my eyes. A series of three bell chimes came through my headphones.
I was no longer in my home office when I opened my eyes.
The ground around me was covered in blades of grass that shimmered like tiny prisms.
Familiar landmarks dotted the horizon, surrounded by alien flora that pulsated with unique colors.
In the distance, I saw a gargantuan beast galloping forward on four legs. Its body was a mass of writhing tentacles with no visible head or limbs.
It was running toward my neighbor, standing in front of an open door amidst the psychedelic landscape. I sprinted toward him.
“Get back inside, now!” I screamed.
I grabbed him by the collar. “When you wake up, come find me!” I shouted, pushing him through the open door.
I pulled out my earbuds. In a blink, I was back in my home office. I was covered in sweat and out of breath, but I was alive.
Joan was still connected. “Hey, you’re back? How’d it go?”
I took a second to catch my breath. “He got the message. Now, we wait.”

Stay tuned for Side B to see the other half of the story!
You were right, I do need more! 😂
I love how surreal this got in such a short time, it was like I was in the yellow submarine movie or the wall album, but with more monsters - this is superbly well done!
That was a wild ride—the shift from reality to that surreal world was seamless. The imagery was so vivid, I could picture every detail. How do you come up with these kinds of landscapes?
